Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of visiting Extreme Pita, a renowned Canadian fast-casual chain that's been offering mouth-watering lunch, snack, and dinner options since 1997. Whether you're in the mood for pita sandwiches, salads, or flatbreads - they've got it all, and the best part? It's all incredibly healthy!
Fondly known for their delectable fruit and vegetable stuffed pita pockets, Extreme Pita was the brainchild of brothers Alex and Mark Rechichi. The duo launched their first restaurant right near the Wilfrid Laurier University campus in Waterloo, Ontario. The chain has since bloomed and is now part of MTY Food Group, which has its headquarters in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
My Experience at Extreme Pita
What struck me about this place was their strong commitment to creating tantalizing pita sandwiches without compromising on health. They masterfully combine fresh vegetables, fruits, and other nutritious ingredients, ensuring every bite you take is blissfully delicious and good for you. They're genuinely all about letting folks enjoy a healthy meal without missing out on taste or flavor!
My first dish, a salad, was quite a sight for sore eyes, with its vibrant palette of fresh veggies and proteins. Just looking at it promised delightful and healthy crunchiness. Truth be told - it did not disappoint! You also got to pick between traditional Lebanese-style pita sizes - 6" & 9" or even settle for a bowl if you're cutting down on carbs.
One feature I particularly cherished was the "create your own version." As a picky eater, this option was a lifesaver. I got to choose my base, protein, cheese, and unlimited toppings, all according to my taste and dietary preferences. It's an awesome choice for fellow vegans as well; you can easily skip the cheese or protein for a more plant-focused meal.
Simply put, I found Extreme Pita to be a quick, pocket-friendly, and nutrition-driven paradise. However, every paradise has its quirks, and I'll be touching upon those in a sec.
Primarily specializing in pita sandwiches, Extreme Pita also offers salads, flatbreads, and in some locations, comforting healthy soups. Their menu is wonderfully diverse and categorically simple, including:
- Pitas
- Flatbread
- Pressed Pitas
- Bowls
- Create Your Own
- Kids Menu
- Catering
The Sweet Berita Rolled Pita, their most popular pita sandwich, made a lasting impression on me. The blend of mixed berries with grilled chicken, goat cheese, caramelized red onions, spring mix, romaine, and a liberal dash of creamy balsamic vinaigrette was simply sensational. I'll remember it for a long time.
Their flatbread pitas, their take on the traditional pizza with pita dough as the base, are amazingly appetizing! You choose between toppings like Mozza-cheddar cheese, onions, red peppers, mushrooms, and meats like ham, pepperoni, chicken, etc.
You can also opt for salad bowls resplendent with attending veggies, fruits, protein, cheese, and dressing. This acted as a nice, refreshing break in between all the pita indulgence.
Diving Into the Create Your Own Pita Option
One can actually get lost in their Create Your Own Pita option. With over 50 ingredients on offer, the scope for personalization is virtually limitless. Starting with your base, which can either be pita or grain bowls, right onto picking a selection of cheeses, and finally to the unlimited toppings - the roster of choices is extensive and super exciting.
Are There Vegan Options?
While there are no vegan options explicitly stated in the menu, you can simply ask the staff to create a vegan version of any item by removing certain ingredients. They're extremely accommodating in this regard, ensuring that you get a menu option tailored to your preferences.
I did spot a few items that could easily be turned vegan though:
- Mediterranean Falafel Plate
- You can ask the staff to leave out the feta cheese and the Tzatziki sauce.
- Vegetable Flatbed Pita
- Simply have them remove the cheese toppings.
- Sriracha Falafel Pita
- Instruct them to skip the sriracha mayo.
- Meditteranean Vegetable Signature Pita
- Ask for the feta cheese to be removed from the sandwich.
Yes, they cater to the little ones, too! With all items on the Kids Menu bearing half the calories of regular items, it's a family-friendly color of nutrition and taste. The fact that the kids menu isn't available at all locations is a bit of a downer, though.
Does Extreme Pita Deliver?
With easy online ordering through their website and delivery to your doorstep, enjoying a great meal has never been easier. Simply pick a nearby branch, place your order, pay, and voila!
Extreme Pita Operating Hours
The operating hours vary based on locations, but most open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. They also offer catering services, as long as you place orders during these operating hours.
Pros
- Offers a variety of healthy options
- "Create your own" option allows for personalized meals
- Convenient online ordering and delivery
- Family-friendly with a dedicated Kids Menu
Cons
- Not enough vegan options explicitly stated in the menu
- Kids Menu not universally available across all locations
All things considered, my experience with Extreme Pita was positive, offering healthy, quick, and delicious options. However, they could do well to be more forthcoming with vegan options on the menu and to make the Kids Menu universally accessible.
