If you're anything like me and prefer to enjoy some quality Chinese food while snuggled up on your couch re-watching Game of Thrones for the umpteenth time, then China Star has got you covered. Let me tell you, every dish I've tried – from spicy seafood that makes your forehead glisten, to the garlic chicken that oozes flavour all over your tastebud, from the rich, nutritious soups, to the mild curries, and oh! The ever so addictive noodles... they've upped the ante when it comes to handling my cravings for some good Chinese cuisine.
I've been told that China Star has been a local gem, supplying the community with top-notch Chinese food for years. And trust me, it shows. Every time I've visited (those Sunday cravings always get the better of me), I've always marveled at how warm and welcoming their hospitality is. If you're also into the whole "fast-food-but-not-really" scene, their prompt service is a godsend. Plus, the prices are truly realistic - easy on your pocket without compromising on the quality.
For all those curious buds out there, here's their website – http://www.tochinastar.com/. You might want to check it out.
So, where exactly is China Star located?
I get it; a diner with the same name might exist in every other street. But, I'm talking about a very specific one - the China Star restaurant in Columbia. You can find this goldmine at 1240 Columbia Centre, Columbia, Illinois.
So, what’s good at China Star you might ask?
To say that the China Star menu is packed full of mouth-watering Chinese dishes would be an understatement. Appetisers, soups, a buffet of noodle dishes, seafood, chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian dishes, is there anything they haven't mastered? I remember the first time I tried their Fried Wonton, a culinary journey began and ended atop a crispy wonton shell lined with cream cheese.
They might call them Chef’s Specality dishes, but to me, they're a slice of heaven. For example, their 'Happy Family' dish. It includes jumbo shrimp, slices of chicken, beef, and pork with assorted Chinese vegetables, all smothered in brown sauce. Man, the word 'Palatable' was invented for delicacies like these.
And seafood? Please don't get me started. The options are endless and include Shrimp or Scallops. They're served with choice of mixed vegetables, cashew nuts, spicy garlic sauce, or fresh broccoli.
How spicy is China Star?
Craving for some spice? The spicy icons against each dish on the menu were literally meant for my spice-thirsty soul. Go for the Kung Pao Chicken, Szechuan Chicken, Mongolian Beef, or Scallops with Garlic Sauce if you can take the heat.
And if you're not much into spice, worry not, the selection is vast. You can always clarify with them about the spice levels too. All in all, it's all about comfort and satisfaction at China Star which I feel is phenomenal.
China Star Opening Hours?
Thankfully, they're open Monday through Saturday but sadly, not on Sundays (a bummer, I know). Here are their standard opening hours:
- Monday - Thursday: 10:45am - 9pm
- Friday - Saturday: 10:45am - 9:30pm
Are there options for herbivores?
Absolutely! They have some delightful selections that are absolutely meat-free. Their Vegetarian Dishes include Fresh Broccoli with Garlic Sauce, Sauteed Fresh Broccoli, and Sauteed Mixed Vegetable, among others. Being the garlic sauce fan that I am, Fresh Broccoli with Garlic Sauce is my personal favourite.
How healthy is it?
Don't let anyone fool you, Chinese food, and especially the China Star menu, have plenty of healthy food options. They even have a 'Special Diet Menu' with dishes designed for health-conscious folks.
Do they also deliver?
Yes, they do! You can enjoy China Star's wonderful spread right in the comfort of your own home. Just check their website or give them a call to confirm if they deliver in your area. And if pickup's more your thing, they encourage that too!
Reservations?
Well, no. They don't take reservations. But the good thing is, there's ample seating most of the times. If you're coming around with a large group, it's worthwhile to get in touch with them beforehand.
How about alcohol?
No, they don't, which I found a bit disappointing. However, the tremendous quality of food here more than makes it up. For a round of drinks at home, a quick stop at your local wine store would do the job.
Yes, China Star offers Lunch Specials - a host of signature dishes at a reduced price. I mean, they give you a meal at $7.25, which includes a main dish, Chicken Fried Rice or White Rice and Crab Rangoon - such steals are rare, if you ask me.
