When I stepped into Port of Subs, I felt steeped in history. You would too, if you knew it was started by two entrepreneurial brothers in 1972, and then bought by a man named John Larsen just three years later. Originating as a modest sandwich shop in Sparks, Nevada, Port of Subs has impressively expanded to over 100 outlets across the United States. It's quite the story, right?
What Makes This Sub Joint Stand Out?
Port of Subs is the Subway of Nevada, but in my opinion, it's one notch higher. Not only do they craft their sub sandwiches fresh daily, they also prepare all the sauces, dressings, soups, desserts and even the potato chips on-site! I personally witnessed them take out a stash of freshly made bread to be used for my order. Talk about freshness!
Of course, I was overwhelmed by the cleanliness of the restaurant, the warm smiles of the team and the quality of the ingredients. All these tiny aspects made the eating experience unique and elevated Port of Subs from being just another sub-joint.
Size Matters
Port of Subs are known for their massive sandwich sizes – as big as 24 inches! On one of my visits, I dared to try their X-Large size, a gargantuan 2-foot beast that could easily be the star attraction at a party! Needless to say, I ended up having subs for dinner as well!
Where Can I Find Port of Subs?
With over 97 locations across the country, you can find Port of Subs in California, Arizona, Oregon, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Washington.
The Multitude of Subs-Choices
The bread here is the star of the show – baked fresh daily in varieties of wheat, white, sourdough and more. You wouldn't believe the range of subs here. I decided to go for 'The Ripper' - a blissful mix of mozzarella cheese and roast beef singed with spicy brown mustard. My friend tried out Papa's Favorite loaded with pepperoni, hard salami, and provolone cheese on white bread with tomato sauce. It truly left a lasting impression on both of us.
The Health Factor
Although sub sandwiches may not be the healthiest of foods, they're definitively a better choice than regular fast food. I found myself satiated without feeling overcome with guilt post meal. Of course, the type of bread, condiments, and meat you choose will contribute to the overall healthiness of your sandwich, but a sub here can be a wholesome meal without being too indulgent.
Got an Appetite for More?
Port of Subs isn't all about subs though. You can enjoy hearty salads, breakfast favorites, specialty wraps along with freshly baked desserts. Their breakfast dishes are available all day, so egg and bacon lovers like me are in for a treat any time of the day!
Heat It Up
Port of Subs offers an array of mouthwatering hot sandwiches as well. Do not miss out on their Teriyaki Chicken Melt; I absolutely savored the crispy chicken strips combined with creamy teriyaki sauce and melted Monterey Jack cheese!
Amp Up Your Sub
Wondering if you could add some bacon to your sub? Absolutely! I added it to my salad order, and for an extra $2, you can add bacon to any sandwich for some extra crunch and flavor.
A Salad Wonderland
Port of Subs offers a broad selection of salads, ranging from Spinach Salad, Caesar Salad, Tuna Salad, Chef Salad, and Garden Salad. I am a hardcore spinach salad fan now, topped with red onion and bacon bits it was refreshing yet filling.
Your Loyalty Is Rewarded
I was pleased to find that they offer a loyalty program. Every food and drink purchase earns you points, and every 100 points gets you $5 Sub Bucks credit. You even get $5 on your birthday! And when you get enough points for a free sub, you can choose any sub from the menu as your reward. It is a win-win situation!
