During my latest food escapade, I found myself at Nando’s, a fast-casual dining restaurant renowned for their lunch and dinner offerings. I found my taste buds taking a journey with the diverse
Taking a bite into Nando’s unique history, it was started by two friends – Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin in 1987. The epic tale of Nando’s birth is quite similar to how most genius ideas ignite: two friends grabbing a bite at a Portuguese-Mozambican joint in Johannesburg, South Africa, falling head over heels with the peri-peri chicken and then deciding to buy the restaurant itself. And voila, Nando’s, named after Fernando's son, was born!
Since its humble beginning, Nando’s became a sensation and opened multiple outlets in Johannesburg, and eventually globally, starting from Portugal in 1989. It simply exploded in popularity, and now you find a Nando's in over 30 countries including Canada, South Africa, the US, the UK.
What I found interesting was their choice of mascot - the Rooster of Barcelos, a common Portuguese symbol, given the fact that they fell in love with the chicken at a Portuguese-Mozambican restaurant.
You can check out more about the restaurant on their official website here.
Stepping into Nando’s
So, what sets Nando's apart? A couple of things: the ambiance and ingredients. Walking into one of their restaurants is a joy for the senses, filled with original art and beautiful interior designs. The South African music playing in the background is an extra treat.
Of course, the most important part – the food – doesn't disappoint. The fresh and natural ingredients, without any artificial additives, colors, or flavors, straightaway scored big in my book. And if you love flavors seeping into every bite of your chicken, Nando's does it right with a 24-hour marination process.
The Taste of Nando’s
Be prepared for a spicy treat! Their signature peri-peri chicken surely packs a punch. Practically every item on the menu – from chicken breasts and burgers can be fire-inducing, but fear not, they cater to all palates. You can choose your heat levels from 'Plain…ish' to 'Extra Hot' depending on how much you can handle.
A Peek at Nando’s Menu
Did I mention chicken? Chicken by itself, on a burger, wrap, salad – you name it! And yes, all come with that signature peri-peri. Vegetarian options aren't an afterthought here, with offerings like the Spiced Chickpea Burger and Portobello Mushroom & Halloumi Pitta. I truly appreciated this inclusivity.
Ordering Experience and More at Nando’s
Whether you prefer dining in, pick-up, or delivery, Nando’s has got it all covered. You can place an order through their website or mobile app. They also impress with a dedicated children’s menu, lovingly called Nandinos. Their typical operating hours range from 11:30 am to 10 pm, varying slightly depending on the location.
Nando’s does a good job with healthier options too, like the Rainbow Bowl packed with nutritious veggies and the Quinoa & PERi-Tomato Salado. Chicken lovers will be glad to hear it’s a healthy type of meat, low in fat and served with wholesome ingredients.
For folks keen on Halal food, Nando's might be a bit of a hit or miss with some locations licensed as Halal while others aren't.
