Steak Escape, my go-to for both lunch and dinner, is often credited as the original mall cheesesteak store. They claim to be the home of America's favorite cheesesteak, and I couldn't dispute that. To this day, I have quite a number of fun stories from my visits to Steak Escape as I consistently find myself returning for more.
The birthplace of Steak Escape happens to be Columbus, Ohio. Apparently, the founders, Ken Smith and Mark Turner, were cheesesteak addicts like me! Their ingenious solution to their cheesesteak cravings was launching their cheesesteak company in 1982. The odds seemed against them as they started from a tiny closet-sized store while friends and family continued to discourage them, but look at them now – a massive success. I’m reminded of my own journey of starting from scratch when I hear their story. Check out more about them on their website https://steakescape.com/

Where did I find Steak Escape stores?

I've encountered the majority of Steak Escape stores during my travels across the United States, specifically in shopping malls. The company also runs stores in some airports. Interestingly, Steak Escape reached far and abroad to set up stores in Lebanon, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia. Steak Escape specializes in some fantastic subs. They are famous for their 100% USDA Choice steak cheesesteaks, creatively served in 8 different options, complete with sautéed onions, mushrooms, peppers, and different types of cheese. The variety is enough to impress any foodie, like myself. There's more, though. The menu boasted an enticing range of subs, with one standout choice - The Hangover. After one too many late-night blogging sessions, this sub, packed with breakfast items, proved to be just the cure I needed! On the off chance you're not into subs, do not fret. You've still got a variety on offer from Steak Escape. They serve impressive salad bowls, loaded with greens and vegetables, that come with either chicken or steak. Plus, you can enjoy their signature subs, deliciously wrapped. Then, complement your meal with a side of loaded fries – freshly-cut and smothered in cheese and different toppings, it's a food-lover's dream. And trust me, it tastes as good as it sounds! Yes, they do have a kids’ menu! It's like a mini version of the regular Steak Escape menu. Your little ones can choose from Chicken Nibblers or a 4” grilled steak or chicken sub, served with fries and a soft drink. I took my niece once, and she absolutely adored the Chicken Nibblers.

How healthy is Steak Escape?

Admittedly, the subs from the Steak Escape menu can come across as 'unhealthy' due to their high calorie, fat and sodium content, mainly because of the generous servings of cheese and sauces. However, you do have healthier alternatives. Enter the range of fresh and flavoursome salad bowls, aptly called healthy bowls, all under 400 calories. I've tried their Sriracha Steak Bowl and the Italian Chicken Bowl, and trust me, they've managed to pack in the flavor without the excess calories! So, you can indulge guilt-free, just like I do from time to time.

My experience with Steak Escape’s opening hours

You can find Steak Escape stores open between 11am and 9pm, 7 days a week. But since opening times do vary between different stores, you should double-check your local Steak Escape restaurant's hours or check on their website.

Online ordering at Steak Escape

It seems you can actually order online before you enter the store. This can be a real time-saver during that lunch break rush, or when you simply don't feel like queuing up at the store.

Does Steak Escape have vegetarian options?

Unfortunately, vegetarians might not find many options here. Their signature subs and salads tend to contain a lot of meat, and the only vegetarian item on the menu is the Naked Fries, which may not exactly hit the spot for you.

And what about gluten-free options?

Gluten-free options are also quite limited. Most bread items on the menu contain gluten, and they don't offer gluten-free bread. The Naked Fries are pretty much your only gluten-free option. If you're strongly intolerant or allergic to gluten, it's best you exercise caution and inquire at your local Steak Escape store.

Loyalty rewards at Steak Escape

On a positive note, Steak Escape does have a loyalty program. Every $1 spent earns you a point, equating to 10 cents. Once you've racked up enough points, you can put them to use – on anything on the Steak Escape menu.

    Pros:

  • Generous portions
  • Various menu options
  • Loyalist reward program
  • Presence in malls and airports

    Cons:

  • Limited vegetarian and gluten-free options
  • Most subs can be high in calories, fat, and sodium
