Dan Evins founded Cracker Barrel in 1969 in Lebanon, Tennessee. The company was conceived to provide travelers with a place to stop for a good meal and a break from the road. The restaurant's name comes from the old-fashioned general stores once common in rural areas and featured barrels of crackers stacked on the counter. The first Cracker Barrel opened near I-40, and a new highway was built through central Tennessee. The restaurant quickly became a popular stop for travelers, thanks to its home-cooked meals and country store atmosphere. Today, there are over 650 Cracker Barrel locations across the United States.
