Swig is a beverage chain of drive-through fountain soda shops offering their signature "Dirty Soda" and other snacks and refreshments.
Swig was founded in 2010 by Nicole Tanner and her husband, Todd. They were fans of Sonic, a fast-food restaurant serving flavored sodas with pebble ice, but realized they had to wait in long lines to order drinks since other customers were also in line for food. They thought, why not start a shop for people who only want to order drinks, thus, Swig came to life. Swig is known for serving "Dirty Soda," a drink made of a base beverage, flavored syrup, and cream. The company trademarked the name "Dirty Soda" in 2013.
The first location was in St. Geroge, Utah, right across the Dixie State University (now Utah Tech University). The initial reception was overwhelming since Utah is the headquarters of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, whose church doctrines prohibit them from drinking alcohol and other hot beverages such as tea or coffee. Because members of the Church are known to drink a lot of soda to have their caffeine fix, Swig became a natural favorite. So much so that the second location was only a mile away, which was opened to relieve the long lines from the first location.
After expanding to 16 locations in 2017, Tanner sold the company to the restaurant management firm Four Foods Group. By 2023, the company announced an opening of 25 more locations in the US, mainly in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho. A Las Vegas location is also in the works.

What Makes Swig Different?
Swig sets itself apart by being a beverage-focused drive-through shop with a limited sweets and treats menu. There is no dine-in in their locations, although there are plans to open a few dine-in locations in the future. The main concept behind Tanner's Swig was to offer a place where customers didn't have to leave their cars to order drinks, and thus the fountain soda drive-through concept, similar to Sonic, but without the food. This concept makes it an ideal way for customers to get quick, convenient, and delicious drinks to cool them down during hot weather.
Another thing that makes Swig different is its offering of customized drinks. There are 20 base drinks available, plus 30 or more flavored syrups, creams, and fruit purees. While the Swig menu features over 20 signature drinks, customers can make their very own combinations, making it possible to create a million different possibilities. At Swig, customers can become their very own mixologists.
The drinks are also very Instagrammable, with all the swirling colors, creating a brand image that matches the zeitgeist of today. Celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and TikTok stars have showcased their Swig drinks, helping to increase the brand's popularity.
The Swig menu consists of the following categories:
-
Sodas
- Revivers
- Refreshers
- Hot Chocolate
- Sweets and Treats
- Create Your Own
- Pretzel Bites
The Sodas category is the Dirty Sodas menu with 20 signature items like The Founder, Big Al, Raspberry Dream, and others. It is made of a base soda, flavored syrup, and cream. The company partnered with a number of soda companies to serve this drink, such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi. The soda base includes Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, and Mountain Dew.
The Revivers is a drink made of Red Bull energy drink, flavored syrup, and cream. This is for anyone who needs a boost of energy and flavor, with items that include Mountain Man, Surf's Up, and many others.
The Refreshers category is made of sparkling water, flavored syrup, and cream. It's for customers who don't want soda and Red Bull but still want to have a taste of flavored beverages from Swig.
Other items on the menu include hot and frozen chocolate and Boba, with flavors that include Mango Bango, Thai Coconut, and Pina Colada.
In terms of Sweets and Treats, some of the items include sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, dirt balls, and strawberry frosted cookies. They also have Pretzel Bites with two options for dips, which are Strawberry Cream Cheese and White Cheddar.
With so many different combinations and signature drinks, it can be a challenge to order at Swig for the first time.
